Svolvaer, Norway

Svolvaer is the chief town of the Lofoten Islands, and like so many other Lofoten towns, it is a fishing village, primarily known for cod. Its mountain backdrop leads to plenty of hiking, skiing and rock climbing, most famously on the pinnacle of Svolvaergeita ("Svolvaer Goat"), where daredevils jump between the two "horns." Svolvaer is also somewhat of an artists' colony and home of the famed Norwegian painter Gunnar Berg. Peruse galleries featuring local artists' works or discover the islands' World War II experience of a Nazi occupation at the Lofoten War Museum. For a frosty drink, head to Magic Ice, an ice bar where patrons don warm clothes and admire massive ice sculptures. Depending on the time of year, visitors on a whale-watching tour may glimpse orcas or humpbacks.
